Shoplifting Laws in Pennsylvania

Shoplifting rules in Pennsylvania are outlined in 18 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 3929. If you are ever caught hiding the items from the store plus taking them out of the store boundaries without the intention of paying, then you are guilty. 

Penalties

Synopsis of Offense: Items under $150 are considered summary offenses, and the following penalties apply:

  • You can end up for 90 days or more in prison. 
  • Penalties can go up to $300. 

Misdemeanor: The following consequences may arise from the charging of an item valued between $150 and $1,000 as a first-degree misdemeanor:

  • Five years or more in jail

Felony: Items costing more than $1,000 may give rise to serious charges and harsh penalties.

Pennsylvania now permits retailers to file civil lawsuits against shoplifters.
